Last year all records for cyber threats detected were broken. They exceeded 62.6 billion, a figure that represents an increase of 20% compared to 2019. These data derive from the annual report by Trend Micro, a company specializing in cloud security.

In 2020, 119,000 threats were detected per minute, and those related to Covid-19 totaled more than 16 million. They consisted mainly of malicious URLs, spam, and malware, which used the pandemic as bait to steal personal and financial information.

The rise in threats is primarily attributed to the remote working boom, a trend that cyberattackers have exploited to the best of their ability. In fact, home networks have been the gateways on which they have focused their efforts to try to reach corporate systems. These attacks touched 2,900 million, with a growth of 210%. The most used tactic has been brute force logins aiming to take control of the router or a smart device.

Email has been the most widely used way to infect computers. 91% of the threats blocked by Trend Micro were detected on this medium. The phishing attacks are still very high. Some 14 million unique malicious URLs tried to take advantage of remote worker distractions to infect their systems.

Ransomware has also seen a boom, mainly in public administration, banking, industry, and healthcare. Detections of this type of malware increased by 34%.

The number of Zero-Day vulnerabilities is up to 40%. The most curious thing is that many of the exploited bugs date back 15 years. Many of these attacks targeted VPNs through which employees connect to enterprise IT systems.

These data show that security has to be a priority for organizations and more so in the current situation. Many of the users carry out their professional tasks from home. The solutions chosen to facilitate remote working have to integrate robust security mechanisms and allow policies that are best suited to each vertical to ensure data and systems are safe.

One of the most popular is UDS Enterprise, which in addition to virtualizing Windows and Linux desktops offers the flexibility to virtualize applications and enable remote access to office computers.
