Wikipedia celebrates its 20th virtual birthday party this Friday

The free encyclopedia par excellence is turning two decades on Friday, January 15. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Wikipedia team has organized a virtual event that anyone who wants can join. Especially all the people who make this open and shared knowledge website possible are invited: the volunteers who edit articles, the donors who help make it work, the collaborating institutions, the developers participating in the project, readers...

The global virtual birthday party will be streaming live on Facebook and YouTube this Friday at 17:00 CET. The founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, as well as the executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, Katherine Maher, will take part in the event. It will also feature comments from some volunteers who will offer their views on the evolution of this online source of knowledge and their wishes for the future.

Different countries and communities will hold other celebrations for this anniversary. In Spain, on Friday the 15th at 11AM CET a 45-minute event has been scheduled with cultural institutions in which some prominent personalities will participate. Teppo Tauriainen, Swedish ambassador to Spain, Carmen Marcos Alonso, deputy director of the National Archaeological Museum, Inés Rodríguez Hidalgo, director of the Valladolid Science Museum, Joaquín Díaz González, founder and main patron of the Joaquín Díaz and Elena Sánchez Nogales Foundation, Head of the Digital Content Diffusion Service of the National Library, they will transmit interesting messages to the audience. In the afternoon, after the general anniversary session, at 6:00PM there will be a special party with communities and at 7:15PM * 5 virtual rooms with different current themes will be set up. They will be open to anyone who wants to contribute ideas or relate their experience. Specifically, the topics will be the following: Wikipedia and education, Gender gap in Wikipedia, Wikipedia and rural areas, Fight against disinformation in Wikipedia and Quality in the Wikipedia content**.

To date, Wikipedia has more than 55 million articles in more than 300 languages, which are consulted more than 20 billion times by users around the world each month.
