Telecommuting with UDS: Remote access to computers

by | Mar 26, 2020

Thousands of organizations worldwide face the challenge of implementing a remote working system urgently to ensure the continuity of their business. The UDS Enterprise connection broker for desktop and application virtualization allows to establish an efficient and secure telecommuting system quickly and easily. With this VDI broker, the IT department can decide the way that best suits their needs to allow work from home: enable access to Windows and Linux virtual desktops and applications or to physical devices located in offices. In both cases, employees can use any device to connect.

In this article we will focus on the possibilities that UDS Enterprise offers for the IT department to authorize remote access to physical devices with security guarantees.

The great versatility of this connection broker allows to put in place from a basic system without the need for a virtualization platform to one as complete as possible with infinite customization, management and automation possibilities. You can use the virtualization platforms, authenticators and connection protocols that best suit each workplace, enabling all needed to run simultaneously. And all this without a VPN, although UDS Enterprise also supports this technology.

With UDS Enterprise, remote access to physical devices is done through the “Static IP Machines Provider” connector. It allows configuring the access of an unlimited number of users to different computers or enabling Terminal Server mode, that is, allowing multiple users to access the same computer.

Thanks to the compatibility of UDS Enterprise with OpenGnsys , IT administrators can define the access schedules and program the turning on and off of the machines, obtaining significant energy savings and avoiding overloading of the devices, which are not prepared to remain turned on for days or weeks. The union of these two solutions also allows fixing issues remotely, such as the sudden shutdown of a computer which is something quite trivial but requires the intervention of a person.

In addition to all the management and automation benefits, UDS Enterprise adds an extra layer of security and enables the adoption of the zero trust model: all connections are made through a secure gateway (UDS Tunneler), minimum privilege policies can be established and multi-factor authentication can be used. It also allows granular access control policies to be established, so that the IT administrator can define which devices the user can connect and redirect.

With this connection broker, the IT team can have full control over the environment, which can be monitored at all times. In case of detecting a threat, it can be easy isolated and fixed.

We remind that another way to implement remote working with UDS Enterprise is to provide employees with access to Windows and Linux VDI and vApp. For more information, contact our team at [email protected]
